Chinese delegation participated in the 2018 Munich Satellite Navigation Summit

On March 5-7, 2018, the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit 2018 was held in Munich, Germany. Nearly 300 representatives from China, the European Union, the United States, Russia, Japan, Vietnam and others attended the meeting. The theme of this year's summit is: “GNSS - the key to autonomy”. By the panel reports and discussions, it explores the needs, applications and developments of GNSS in autonomous driving. Chinese representatives from the International Cooperation Center of China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO), Academic Exchange Center of CSNO, the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC), Shanghai Jiaotong University, and China Academy of Space Technology attended the summit.

According to the arrangements of the conference, an opening ceremony was held on March 5th with the theme of "Competition and Cooperation in Satellite navigation ". Representatives of government agencies, international organizations and enterprises from China, the United States, Russia, Europe and Japan were invited to attend and give presentations. Dr. Jun Shen, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Center of CSNO, delivered a speech on behalf of China, and exchanged views with the host of the conference and representatives on issues of common interests. 

In the "GNSS System Update" panel held in the morning of March 6th, the global and regional system suppliers from the United States, Russia, the European Union, China, and Japan introduced the development of their satellite navigation systems respectively. Dr. Jun Shen presented a report on the BDS development update. He explained the achievements, latest developments, and near-term plans for the construction, application, and international cooperation works of BDS, which attracted extensive attention from the participating experts.  

A dedicated BDS Workshop was held on the morning of March 7th. The Workshop was chaired by Dr. Guifei Jing, Dean of School of BeiDou Belt and Road in BeiHang University, and focused on the theme of “BeiDou Application Innovations”. He showed the latest applications and innovations of BDS by introducing the application systems such as XiHe system, the applications in the field of policing and insurance through BDS - Instant judgment, indoor smart phones positioning, vehicle navigation, driving school applications, drive autonomously, traffic monitoring and management systems. The BDS Workshop attracted more than 100 international experts and scholars to participate in discussions. 

In addition, on the eve of this Summit started, the Application Subgroup Meeting of the Working Group on Enhancement of GNSS Performance, New Services and Capabilities of International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG WG-B) was held on the afternoon of March 4th. Professor Xingqun Zhan, co-chair of ICG WG-B and Dr. Jun Shen, co-chair of the Application Subgroup attended the meeting. This special session focused on in-depth discussions on topics such as developing User Requirements Questionnaires, updates of BDS application status, GALILEO high-precision services, SBAS dual-frequency multi-constellation testing, GALILEO E5 AltBOC signal testing, and positioning system planning of the South Korea, and formulated the next work plan. 

By attending the Satellite Navigation Summit in Munich, the Chinese delegation learned about the latest developments in the field of international satellite navigation, publicized the BDS achievements, and promoted the further development of international cooperation in BDS.
