China-US Satellite Navigation Meeting Held in Beijing

On November 29th, 2017, China and U.S. held a satellite navigation meeting in Beijing. Li Wang, Chairman of China Satellite Navigation System Committee, and Jonathan Margolis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Department of State, led the meeting. Changfeng Yang, Chief Architect of the BeiDou System, Director Chengqi Ran and Deputy Director Jiaqing Ma, of China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO), Deputy Director Qi Yu of the International Cooperation Department, the China National Space Administration, Deputy Director David Turner of the Space and Advanced Technology Office, the US Department of State, attended the meeting.

The meeting reviewed the progress of active cooperation since the establishment of the China-US satellite navigation cooperation mechanism in 2014 and fully affirmed the results of the previous cooperation. Both sides agreed that the satellite navigation cooperation between China and the US has broad prospects. Strengthening the cooperation between BDS and GPS systems will lead to innovations and developments in many fields and bring better services to users around the world. 

 

Under the auspices of Chairman Li Wang and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Jonathan Margolis, Director Chengqi Ran and Deputy Director David Turner signed “the Joint Statement of BDS and GPS signal compatibility and interoperability”. The statement indicated that the two systems are radio-frequency compatible within the framework of ITU that have achieved civil signal interoperability, and will continue to carry out compatibility and interoperability cooperation. 

 

Both sides also held consultations on the follow-up cooperation issues such as the third Sino-US satellite navigation system meeting and reached several agreements.
