Globally launched Chinese Solutions Present the World-Leading Internet Technical Achievements

Date:03/12/2017
BDS, as a name card for China, steps into the spotlight again, attracting worldwide attention.

The 4th World Internet Conference kicked off in Wuzhen, East China's Zhejiang Province on Dec 3rd, 2017. BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) was presented to the public as one of the world-leading Internet scientific and technological achievements for the first time. Ran Chengqi, the Director General of China Satellite Navigation Office, showed this independently-developed “black technology” to the world via a global broadcast. The scientific and technological achievements from companies such as Huawei, Microsoft, Alibaba, Apple, Amazon and Qualcomm were also released.

“The birth of satellite navigation technologies completely transformed our world. We are all familiar with GPS. Today, I want to tell you that during the transformation, China is not a bystander, but a practitioner, and more of an innovator!” said Ran Chengqi, “In 2000, BDS-1 was built. In 2012, BDS-2 was completed. Just in last month, the deployment of the new-generation BDS-3 global system has begun.”

A more efficient and more accurate kind of spatial-temporal service is being offered by the BDS for its "Chinese solution".

At the conference, Ran Chengqi delivered a speech to present BDS’ most prominent features and applications to the world, such as the BDS-based short message communication, high-precision applications, and Internet of Vehicles.

BeiDou is so powerful?

Now BDS is the defender of fishermen. Thanks to BDS, more than 10,000 fishermen have been rescued since 2003.

People who are terrible with directions can also enjoy lane-level navigation. Fire trucks are guided to the hydrants by the BDS accurate navigation.

Around 4.8 million commercial vehicles in China are equipped with BDS, resulting in cutting the rate of major road traffic accidents and injuries in 2016 by almost half of that in 2012, and the average travel time being down by a third.

How does BDS do it?

BDS is the only navigation system that features short message communication at present. It has pioneered the integration of navigation, positioning and timing, location reporting, and short-messaging, which is not available in other systems. It was the BDS wisdom that opened up a new world of satellite navigation applications.

BDS is the first to provide centimeter-level high-precision location-based services in China. The integration of the BDS ground-based augmentation network across the country and the Internet+, big data, and cloud computing makes BDS high-precision functions a public service like running water and electricity, which are at people’s fingertips and available on demand. Today, “BeiDou+”, the BDS high-precision service, has been inspiring endless innovations and transformations.

The world's largest Internet of Vehicles platform was built in China, utilizing BDS technologies

A name card for China

BDS has become a Chinese business card for the 'One Belt and One Road' going international”, said Director Ran. BDS has become the standard for 4G mobile phones sold in China; BDS has joined three major international organizations for civil aviation, maritime affairs, and mobile communications; BDS applications have covered over 50 countries and regions serving more than 3 billion people.

Going to the center of the world stage

Looking into the future, Ran Chengqi is full of lofty ambitions: “When the first Centenary Goal comes, we will build a world-class system. BDS is making big strides toward the center of the global stage. We look forward to the arrival of “the BeiDou always and everywhere”. In the new era, let the BeiDou come together!” We look forward to the arrival of the Beidou. Beidou, China, is also the world! New era, let Beidou come together!"
